Summary

I was sexually abused at eight and turned to drugs and alcohol to cope, feeling empty and bitter towards God. My mom invited me to a True Woman ’12 Conference where I was initially disengaged. However, hearing Joni Eareckson Tada sing ‘Amazing Grace’ made me realize God’s love for me. I prayed for Jesus to save me, and I experienced a transformative healing of my heart. This brought me back to faith and a relationship with God, overcoming my past struggles.

Brooke believed there was a Godโ€”she believed He sent His Son Jesus to die on the crossโ€”but she didnโ€™t want anything to do with Him. Thatโ€™s because sheโ€™d been sexually abused for about a year when she was eight. So she turned to drugs, alcoholโ€”anything to prove just how much she hated God.

In the midst of her rebellion against God, Brookeโ€™s mom invited her to Revive Our Heartsโ€™ True Woman ’12 Conference. She didnโ€™t want to go, but what teenage girl can turn down the offer of free shopping? So she agreed to come.

Brooke was disengagedโ€”arms folded, ears closedโ€”until Joni Eareckson Tada wheeled out on stage and sang โ€œAmazing Graceโ€ during the very last conference session. Thatโ€™s when it hit her. Here was someone else who went through so much, and yet still believed that God loved her.

Instantly, Brooke responded, โ€œGod, I canโ€™t do this anymore. Iโ€™m so empty. I have this heavy weight on me. I need You. Come save me!โ€ She reached over for her momโ€™s booklet and wrote, โ€œI once was blind, but now I see. I love you, Momโ€
