Summary
SummaryIβm Kevin Garratt, and for 30 years, my wife Julia and I served as teachers, entrepreneurs, and Christian aid workers across seven Chinese cities. We believed in opennessβsharing everything we did, including running a coffee house near the North Korea border where we brought hope to orphanages and schools for the disabled. π But one evening, as we left a seemingly innocent dinner arranged to help a family with their daughterβs education, our world changed: what looked like a wedding celebration was actually a trap. They seized us, separated Julia and me, and for the next 775 days, my faith would be tested in unimaginable ways.
The first six months were in solitary confinement, where I faced threats of torture and execution. π’ Yet even in the darkest momentsβwhen they accused me of espionage, I held onto Godβs promises through verses like 2 Corinthians 1: βthat we might not rely upon ourselves but on God who raises the dead.β Through sleepless nights, I cried out to Him, and He answered in a whisperβa verse or a songβthat reminded me He was present.
When I finally shared a cell with 14 other inmates, I saw Godβs faithfulness manifest. Criminals and former policemen would notice me praying and ask about the Bible. One doctor, en route to a huge prison, said, βKevin, I want to believe like you.β Even there, behind those cold bars, God used my humble witness to spark hope. π
Today, looking back, I see God doing a thousand things: teaching me to rely solely on Him, giving me glimpses of His purpose even in pain, and using our story to reach hearts behind bars and beyond. Julia and I were reunited only a handful of times over those 19 months, and each meeting was a miracle of mercy. Through it all, we learned: no prison can confine Godβs love. β€οΈ
Kevin Garratt and wife, Julia, had spent 30 years in China as teachers, entrepreneurs and Christian aid workers. Then, in 2014, they were accused by the Chinese government of being spies.
