Summary
I’m Cousin Phoebe Kilby, a white genealogist intrigued by a workshop uniting descendants of enslavers and the enslaved. Out of the blue on MLK Day 2007, I emailed Betty Baldwin—another Kilby—hoping to spark reconciliation. Betty, a Black grandmother who integrated her high school at 13, had faced violence, rape, and deep-rooted hate, yet found healing through God’s forgiveness. Our connection led us to uncover a shared ancestor in an 1836 will. Together, we co-authored *Cousins Connected Through Slavery*, channeling proceeds into scholarships for descendants. Through truth, justice, and mercy, we’re fulfilling Dr. King’s dream of brotherhood.
