Summary

I grew up grappling with same-sex attraction, feeling torn between scripture and my desires 😔. After years immersed in the homosexual nightlife and battling meth and other drugs, I hit rock bottom on a Miami beach, mind erased and body exhausted. In that desperate moment, the Holy Spirit whispered, “This isn’t who you are,” and then Jesus appeared, smiling joyfully, beckoning me into His arms ❤️. He reminded me, “Joe, you turned your back on me, but I never turned my back on you.” That embrace became the seed of my freedom. I moved back home, surrendered my will, and immersed myself in God’s Word at Charis Bible College 📖. Today, twenty years out of that lifestyle, I stand healed in identity and filled with His unconditional love 🕊️.

Though Joe had turned his back on his Christian upbringing the Holy Spirit never left him. In the midst of the aids epidemic, heavy drug abuse, and heartache, one encounter with Jesus would change his life forever. This is the Grace Encounter of Joe Hunt.

Throughout his childhood, Joe dealt with same-sex attraction. Having read the Bible all his life, Joe struggled between following his faith and his feelings. Upon graduating high school, he felt the need to be honest and came out as homosexual.

Eventually, he found a boyfriend that he wanted to move in with. About a year into their relationship, the Holy Spirit woke Joe up in the middle of the night saying, “This is not who you are.”

Heartbroken, Joe ended his relationship and moved back home. Attempting to come out of the homosexual lifestyle in his own strength, Joe found himself aching to go out to the clubs he frequently enjoyed.

One day his parents invited him to church where a guest speaker, Andrew Wommack, had visited from Colorado. Sitting in the pew, Joe nearly fell over when he discovered from Andrew that his outward performance had nothing to do with God’s love and forgiveness.

Hearing that God loved him unconditionally, Joe decided to return to the homosexual lifestyle. He moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and began using hard drugs and having relationships with multiple sex partners despite the looming aids epidemic.

One morning after partying in Miami Joe found himself alone on a beach, his mind completely erased. Though he couldn’t even remember his name he could hear the Holy Spirit calling to him saying, “This isn’t how I want you to go.” Hopelessly addicted, Joe cried out to God for help.

As he rested one evening, Jesus appeared to him laughing full of joy. Joe could not understand why He looked so happy to see him. Without saying a word about his homosexuality or drug abuse, Jesus just beaconed him to come and give him a hug.

“Joe you turned your back on me, but I never turned my back on you.” Jesus said as they embraced.

Joe instantly thought of all the hook-ups and nightclubs he had brought Jesus to. Though he had lived his life in complete rebellion, the Holy Spirit had kept his promise to never leave him (John 14:16).

Realizing how deeply God truly loved him, Joe told him candidly that he didn’t want to live trapped “inside the cage of Christianity always wanting what’s outside those bars.” He continued, “It’s got to be eradicated.”

God told Joe to return home.
Living with his mom, Joe started watching Andrew Wommack’s Gospel Truth Program. As he listened to his teachings like Spirit, Soul and Body and Grace the Power of the Gospel, Joe knew that he had to go all in on this new lifestyle and relocated to Andrew’s school in Colorado, Charis Bible College.

While renewing his mind with the word of God, Joe had a revelation. Having gone through countless partners and coming out empty, he realized this whole time he was searching for the kind of love and fulfillment that only Jesus could provide.

As he finished Charis, Joe felt all emotional scars fade as his identity became more and more about who he was in Christ. As of 2024, he has been out of the lifestyle for twenty years.

Having lost many of his friends and loved ones to aids, drug abuse, and suicide, Joe hopes that his Grace Encounter testimony will inspire others to see God’s heart for homosexuals and to invite Jesus into their lives.
