Summary

SummaryI was just a teenager when I first felt God’s call to reach the people of North Sentinel Island. Every step of my journeyβ€”training in linguistics, earning EMT certification, and serving worldwideβ€”was guided by a single purpose: to bring the gospel to a people who had never heard it. πŸ™ On November 15, 2018, I kayaked to the shore, heart pounding with both fear and faith. An arrow pierced my Bible, but I trusted that Jesus was worth every risk. With trembling hands, I wrote a final letter to my family: forgive the Sentinelese, and live obediently to Christ. βœοΈπŸ’” Within hours, I was gone. Yet I believed that true success in God’s Kingdom is obedience, no matter the cost. My prayer was that one day I would see the Sentinelese worshipping around God’s throne, and that my sacrifice would echo as a testimony to their eternal lives. πŸ™Œ

According to church tradition, June 29 marks the martyrdom of the Apostle Paul. This year, Christians around the world will take time on June 29 and throughout that weekend to honor the legacy of those who have sacrificed their lives for the advancement of the gospel. The Day of the Christian Martyr 2022 Inductee is John Chau, who was killed by the North Sentinelese when he went to their island with the gospel.

God called John Chau to North Sentinel Island, where the Sentinelese have no contact with outsiders, their language is unknown, and they have responded violently to past contact. John still obeyed, preparing for the next 9 years to live among them.

On Nov. 15, 2018, John made first contact with the islanders in a kayak. A Sentinelese boy fired an arrow at John that lodged in his Bible. John retreated. β€œGod, I don’t want to die,” John wrote in his journal. β€œWHO WILL TAKE MY PLACE IF I DO? Forgive any of the people on this island who try to kill me, and especially forgive them if they succeed.”

The next day, John penned a note to his family. β€œYou might think I am crazy in all this. But I think it’s worth it to declare Jesus to these people.” On Nov. 17, the fishermen who left John saw tribesmen burying his body.
