At 17, I joined the cadet school, but culture shock and spiritual drift led me away from prayer and a close walk with God. While serving as an air traffic controller in Baldonnell, I suffered a devastating sexual assault that plunged me into the darkest depression I’d ever known. I battled bulimia, drank to numb the pain, and even tried to take my own life. One freezing February night in 2002, I fell into a hidden field near Baldonnell and found myself trapped, hypothermic and alone. Crying out to God, I prayed desperately: β€œLord, help me.” Miraculously, a local farmer heard my faint cry for help and called an ambulanceβ€”God had rescued me from the grave.

Though I was alive, I was spiritually dead. A dear friend brought me to Mass and a prayer meeting, where a holy priest laid hands on me and taught me to keep returning to the sacraments. With nothing left to lose, I traveled to Medjugorje in the summer of 2003, climbed that hill to touch the cross, and felt a new energy surge through my frail body. I stayed two weeks and returned home completely transformedβ€”my parents cried when they saw the change in me. Still, I battled sickness until I cried out again: β€œLord, I know You healed meβ€”no more sickness!” From that moment, I never got sick again.

In 2010 and 2011, I had my first two sons and returned briefly to the Defense Forces, only to be unfairly labeled β€œweak” on my appraisals. But God whispered, β€œI take the weak and make them strong,” so I challenged the ratings internally and then through the Workplace Relations Commission. In September 2020, after seven grueling years, I stood before an adjudicator with my rosary beads and Divine Mercy image, declaring Jesus as my Judge. To everyone’s shockβ€”especially mineβ€”the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission ruled in my favor on December 2, 2020, ordering a review of every discriminatory law in the Defense Forces by December 2021. The impossible had become possible.

Today, I serve as a chaplain, walking in the fullness of God’s grace. If you’re in darknessβ€”depression, abuse, or despairβ€”know that the Lord is your savior. He can rescue you from the pit, restore your strength (Isaiah 40:31), and lead you into a new life filled with purpose and hope. πŸ™β€οΈβœ¨
