She prayed. Opportunities opened. I followed her to a Catholic thanksgiving Mass in Mumbai, and although I didnβt understand the rituals, the peace and message touched me deeply.
One Saturday evening, during communion, the priest looked into my eyes and said: βJesus is calling you.β Those three words shattered my walls. Though I wasnβt baptized, I felt the pull. Weeks later, I asked to be baptized. My name, Rajeshwarβmeaning "King of Gods"βwas a divine setup I never expected. I embraced Jesus, received catechism, and on St. Joseph's feast, I was baptized and became Rajeshwar Joseph Banerji.
Despite challenges with family, and even workplace struggles during the U.S. housing crisis, God was always speaking. One day, overwhelmed, I cried to Jesusβ¦ and He whispered back, reminding me of the nails I drove into His hands. Grace washed over me. He never rejected me. He rejoiced over me, the one lost sheep brought home. πβ¨π
There are several reasons why a person who grew up in a different faith background would decide to be a Christian. Rajeshwar Joseph Banerji, who grew up in a Hindu Brahmin family, chose to receive, accept, and follow Jesus after a defining moment at Holy Mass.
