Summary
SummaryI was 24 when I first walked into prison—a young, frightened Mexican gang member who’d already been stabbed and had stabbed another in return. I grew up in Hamburg, California, with a fractured home but a loving stepdad who introduced me to sports. By my teens, I’d fallen into my stepbrother’s gang life in Rowland Heights, testing drugs that led me from weed to meth and crack. I lost my future chasing ‘fast money,’ ended up in county jail facing a 17-year sentence, and became a monster fueled by anger and racism. In solitary, a tough inmate began sharing Scripture through the door vent—speaking of forgiveness, conviction, and new life in Christ. Over weeks of prayer and chess games, my hardened heart broke. I surrendered to Jesus, found true freedom, and now live renewed by His grace.
In this two part edition of My Story, Jason Lopez shares how God rescued him in prison, delivered him from drug addiction, and pulled him away from the gang lifestyle.
