Summary

SummaryI grew up in a big family but felt there was no peace or love, so I turned to the streets to find my own freedom. One day, my friends introduced me to heroin, and although the first hit made me violently sick, soon I craved that highβ€”feeling strong and invincible. By 21, I was arrested and sent to prison for three months. The withdrawal was brutal: I couldn’t eat or sleep, I vomited, I had diarrhea, and my body burned one moment, chilled the next. I went in and out of prison six timesβ€”each sentence longer than the last. I even tried to detox myself by locking myself away without food or medicine, but the pain always drove me back to the drug.

When I received a six-year sentence, I felt hopeless, even contemplating suicide. Then a pastor, who himself had been addicted and imprisoned, came to our prison. I watched him stand before us as a married man with a family, and I wondered how that could be me. He shared that only by placing my faith in Jesus Christ could I be freed from addiction. On Christmas Day, I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior.

One month later, I was granted an early‐release program to a halfway house. In that Christian environment, I felt genuine love and careβ€”no anger, no violence. After a year, I still feared relapse as I prepared to go home. Early one morning, I opened my Bible to Romans 12:2, which spoke to my mind: β€œDo not conform to the pattern of this world.” I saw myself returning to my old lifeβ€”drinking, smoking, gamblingβ€”and I prayed for transformation. I voluntarily stayed two more years to build my foundation in Christ, focusing on God’s promise in Jeremiah 29:11 that He has a plan to prosper me and give me hope.

When I walked out of that halfway house, I was a new man. My addiction was gone, not just physically but by the power of Jesus’ blood washing away my old life. Today I thank God for blessing me with a loving wife and two beautiful children. His blood has power; His Word has power to change and transform a life. πŸ•ŠοΈπŸ™β€οΈ

Prison. Caning. Horrific withdrawal symptoms that nearly drove him mad. Nothing could make Gideon quit drugs.

In his sixth time in prison, he saw no way out except to die. Then he met a pastor who showed him the Way to a drug-free life.

Most of us spend more than half of our waking hours at the workplace. That’s more than we spend with our family or church. We know what the Bible tells us about being salt and light, serving and leading to the glory of God. But we all know that living out our faith at work isn’t always the easiest, most straightforward journey. We all could use some encouragement and equipping on how to be overcoming, influential Christians at the marketplace. Salt&Light is a gathering place for Christians to unite in spirit and purpose to see God in the 9-to-5, to influence and to impact, to find meaning in the mundane, to wrestle with doubt and despair in faith – and find amazing grace for the journey ahead.
