Summary

Summaryβ€œI grew up among nomadic Muslims in Mali, living in constant fear of witchcraft, demons, and superstitions 😨. In third grade, I saw friends use a ball-point pen, and it sparked my curiosity. I learned two Bible versesβ€”Mark 12:30 and Nehemiah 9:6β€”hoping to earn a pen β€œclick-clack.” As I memorized God’s Word, I realized Christians loved God and weren’t β€˜infidels’ as I’d been taught. Even though my teacher told me Christianity was only for white people, my heart longed for the salvation promised in Romans 6:23 and John 1:12 πŸ™.

Three years later, at a Bible camp where all the campers and leaders were Black, I heard Matthew 11:28, β€œCome to me all who are weary… and I will give you rest.” In September 1967, I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, breaking free from fear of death and dark forces ❀️. I faced persecutionβ€”family beating me, classmates rejecting me, and neighbors charging me more for goodsβ€”but God’s grace kept me firm. Today, I’m the pastor of a Baptist Church in Timbuktu and leader of the Evangelical Alliance of Mali. I prepare new believers for the cost of following Christ, reminding them that Romans 10:13 assures us: β€œNo challenge will come to you that you cannot bear, for God will give you strength” πŸ’ͺ. I encourage unity in the church, remind Americans to live out the gospel in word and deed, and ask prayers for Bibles to reach hungry hearts in Mali.”

Pastor Nouh Yattara was born into a nomadic Muslim family. He became a believer through the work of missionaries in his home country of Maliβ€”and through his desire to own a ball-point pen. After living in fear of superstitions, demons and death, Nouh found new life, and an end to fear, in Christ. β€œI knew if I accepted Jesus that he has the power against all of that,” Pastor Nouh says.

It wasn’t an easy path. Nouh experienced Christian persecution from family members, teachers, kids at school, and his community. In spite of the pressure against him, Nouh stood firm in God’s grace and moved forward in faith.

Today, Nouh is the pastor of a church and leader in Mali’s evangelical association. He uses his own storyβ€”and the stories of other persecuted Christiansβ€”to prepare new believers to endure in their faith despite pressure and persecution.

Listen to hear what Christians in Mali are facing and learn how you can pray for them. You’ll also hear Pastor Nouh’s encouragement to be in fellowship with other believers, encouraging each other on in faith. He’ll also give advice on how you can share the gospel with Muslims in your community.
