Summary
SummaryβI remember the shock of that late evening in August 2000 when a policemanβs knock shattered my worldβI learned my son Michael had been stabbed. Michael was such a gentle soul who loved animals and faithfully attended Mass; losing him felt like losing a piece of my own heart. In the days after the tragedy, I was consumed by angerβfirst at the boy who took Michaelβs life and then at God Himself. I stopped praying, stopped going to church, and wandered through grief like a shell.
But a small voice persuaded me to join a support group for grieving parents. Though I resisted, I began journaling my pain, and eventually my husband and I took a trip to Junction, Texas. One morning on a quiet hill, I poured out my bitterness to God. Suddenly, His peace flooded me, and I felt that old self die as a new self was born. God whispered that I must forgive the young man in prison. Though I was terrified, I met him with an advocate south of Dallas and, in that ten-minute meeting, let go of my unforgiveness. I felt my heart breathe again.
Then came the hardest forgivenessβto forgive myself. For years I replayed the βwhat ifs,β torturing myself with guilt that I wasnβt a perfect mother. But counseling with my priest taught me that Godβs grace restores even the deepest wounds. Months later, I received word that the boy was paroled. My motherβs heart worried for himβwould he know Christ? Would he find a job? I continue to pray for him.
Today, I serve in a ministry, sharing my story of grief, forgiveness, and Godβs unending mercy. If you carry unforgiveness, cry out to HimβHe is waiting to make you new. πβ€οΈ
